“Google Circles” huh!

Here we go again the possibility of another social networking site. Until I read the article How ‘Google Circles’ Could Beat Facebook” I had not heard of the “rumored” Google Circles. It will be interesting to see if Google does in fact develop their version of Facebook. Google already has a strong presence, it’s a household name.

I liked how the author Mike Elgan mentioned that “users are suffering from social network fatigue”. This is so true. Do we really need another “Facebook” to start all over again? First it’s Myspace then Facebook, Linked In falls somewhere in between, and now possibly Google Circles, it does get rather troublesome trying to remember log in information, passwords, feeling obligated to reply immediately to a message, and keeping everything updated.

Despite the time it takes to create and maintain a social networking page I do think social networking sites serve a good purpose both on a personal and professional level. I went to an expo this past Friday. Most of the businesses that had booths were informing people to look them up on Facebook. Facebook is a great advertising tool especially for businesses on small budgets who can argue with f.r.e.e. and consumers who friend businesses on social networking sites often hear of specials and events prior to the general public, it is a win-win situation.

If Google does not jump on this bandwagon in some shape or form I would be surprised.

Read the article if you want to find out more and you be the judge if Google can make it work!

Twitter

Twitter is not just for expressing an opinion about fruitcake , it is also about advertising a product, promoting a business, building a network, and having access to an endless amount of resources.

Up until being a student in the interactive technology program I never used twitter. Did not see the point of telling strangers where I was at 5:45 pm on a cold and windy Tuesday. Besides, the majority of what I heard in the news was negative, the headlines expressed how someone’s house got robbed because of a tweet that explained their vacation plans or how an athlete had to pay out thousands of dollars to some organization or someone because of what they shared and when they shared it. Lesson learned from this don’t tell strangers details about your personal life and don’t share information that can get you into legal trouble. Duh…it’s cyberspace always remember what is placed out there far off in a galaxy called The Internet will be seen by someone and be retrieved by someone somehow regardless if the delete button has been selected after the message was sent.

Since being in the program I have realized that twitter can be useful in the real world. I have found valuable information to use for school, my career, and for personal use. What’s so great about the tool is that when you follow one person you are introduced to not only that person but also their followers and who they are following. I have found useful websites by taking the time to look at the resources that utilize twitter. You can be the first to know about breaking news, sales on your favorite items, or new products, and it  is a good way to find resources for research.

If you have an idea of how powerful twitter can be for the good and bad and make the right decisions about what your post than it can be a useful source. I can see myself being a frequent visitor to twitter.com.
